There are countless initiatives to combat homelessness in the US but few have been as demonstrably effective as these three.

1. One of the most successful programs in reducing homelessness has been federal housing assistance. These programs allow low-income households to rent housing with a modest subsidy that adjusts with income over time.
2. Permanent supportive housing started in New York in the 1980s and has become a very cost-effective solution to homelessness. This model provides affordable housing assistance along with mental health services to homeless populations.
3. Housing First is an initiative that uses the principles of permanent supportive housing to identify and house individuals with mental health and drug abuse problems and then connect them with support services.
